Man’s Plan To Stop Wheelie Bin Fires
BY LAWRENCE JOHN
A BUSINESSMAN believes he has the answer to stopping wheelie bin fires in Wellingborough.
Managing director of BinSafe Ltd in Cambridgeshire, David Carter, is convinced a new device produced by his company could help save lives.
A wheelie bin fire in 2007 was responsible for the death of three-year-old Callum Bland who died a house fire on the Hemmingwell estate in Fulmar Lane.
Mr Carter sees his company’s product as a step forward to fighting bin fires and this device is being tested by the Arson Task Force in Peterborough.
The idea for the steel frame has been developed since January and has gone through many changes since it was first produced.
The unit produced by the company is made from boxed steel, then welded and powder coated for durability, which will prevent the most determined vandals from accessing or damaging the bin.
The frame is ready to use with either free standing or bespoke fitting options, steel running boards allow smooth exit and entry to the frame.
Mr Carter said: “This device is as safe as you can get without completely sealing the bin in a metal box.
David Carter with the new device“I wouldn’t say it was 100 per cent but it is 95 per cent of the way there but what price is someone’s life?”
Northamptonshire Arson Task Force Officer, Mick Rodden said he had been sent some leaflets about this new device and felt anything which stopped more bin fires would be supported.
A spokesman for Wellingborough Council said: “We are always willing to consider new ways to prevent wheelie bin arson and theft, but the bin safe device is not a cost effective, realistic solution for domestic properties at the moment.
“Our main priority is working with the police and the fire service to educate people about the dangers and potential consequences of this type of crime.
We have an education programme, in conjunction with the arson task force’s ‘Business Dragons’ initiative and stickers are being placed on every bin in the borough.”
